A novel about divorce crises – the ups and downs
Before You Go is a story of going through a divorce. About being crushed. And about slowly becoming almost whole again.
Gry has recently gone through a divorce. Together with her two children, she is going to start a new life in the ship wrecked house with yellow wall paper and a strange smell. You can learn a lot from crises. And Gry certainly does.
She learns that when the children are watching, it is possible to swallow a giant lump in one’s throat.
She also learns that experience and maturity have not taught her much. Certainly, she has not grown better in dealing with matters of the heart. Or in controlling herself when drunk.
She learns that even the cutest mini-soccer-coach is not always so sweet. And that she has no idea what to answer, when men from the web ask her what she's doing in her spare time. She learns that a silent phone is worse than a real rejection and that you can be so kind and gentle that you end up being an asshole.
She learns that there is nothing as empty as an abandoned children's room. That loss and longing are things you can learn to live with, and that loneliness is part of the package.
Nevertheless, she never learns what to answer when the seven-year-old daughter says, "Mom, before you go, will you stay a little longer?"
