Niels is married to Annemette and works as a teacher at a gymnasium and both are boring him out of his mind. Late one evening at a bar, his old friend, a war photographer, asks him to join him on an assignment in Beirut. He jumps at the chance.
Beirut is only one out of the many destinations that have been ravaged by war, that Niels and his friend pass through. They travel together from one war to another, in Libya, Mali, Ukraine, and Syria, and meet journalists, local extreme sport athletes and war tourists. They are dark tourists.Just like Niels, everyone has a reason to be there – whatever they fled back home, and they all have their own little stories to tell (or hide).
At a point Niels and Michael travel to Ukraine, but here things take a surprising and catastrophical turn, and they are finally forced to face the dangers they are playing against. After some traumatic experiences, Niels decides to stay at home efter realizing that the travels are too dangerous and for a time his temporarily need for excitement is weakened. A couple of years pass by and as the boredom of everyday life catches up, Niels begins to feel the urge to travel again. Not long after he finds himself in the ultimate war zone, Syria, and perhaps this is when he realizes that he took his bizarre hobby a step too far.
